Sanilac County Partners with Fleis & Vanderbrink to Identify Development-Ready Sites

The EDC is excited to announce a new partnership with Fleis & Vanderbrink to support our efforts in strategic development opportunities across Sanilac County. Through funding provided by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Strategic Site Readiness Program, we will focus on identifying and evaluating priority sites for future commercial and industrial development.

Why Strategic Site Readiness Matters

As Sanilac County plans for future growth, especially in its agricultural, manufacturing, and industrial sectors, it’s more important than ever to prepare  for long-term investments. Strategic Site Readiness means we’re proactively identifying opportunities where growth can happen, and making sure the groundwork is in place to support it. These activities include evaluating available properties across Sanilac County, assessing infrastructure such as utilities, road access, and broadband, analyzing environmental and zoning constraints, and creating a clear, prioritized inventory of development-ready sites. This will ensure Sanilac County is competitive and attractive for future investments whether it is from site selectors, expanding local businesses, or new industries looking for a place to grow.

Why Fleis & Vandenbrink?

In addition to bringing over 30 years of experience in civil engineering, community development, and economic planning, this team has already been working in Sanilac County with the Sanilac County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority, which allows them to understand the unique challenges and opportunities rural communities like ours face. Additionally, their team has helped several counties across the State of Michigan prepare properties for development through a combination of GIS and mapping technology, site prioritization frameworks, and grant and incentive alignment.

Next Steps

Over the next several months, F&V will be working closely with EDC Staff, local municipalities, real estate professionals, and utility providers to gather data and evaluate potential sites. These efforts will lead to a comprehensive site inventory, individual site profiles with maps, photos, and utility details. This will culminate in a tiered readiness ranking to prioritize sites for immediate and long-term investment coupled with strategic recommendations for how to improve Tier 2 and Tier 3 sites.

If you're a property owner, local official, or stakeholder that knows of available sites or are interested in learning more, we want to hear from you! Email info@huroncounty.com or call our office at 989.262.6431
