Huron County Selected for Michigan’s Inaugural Community Growth Academy

We’re excited to share that Huron County has been selected as one of just 10 Michigan communities to participate in the first-ever Community Growth Academy, a program of the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity’s (LEO) Community & Worker Economic Transition Office.

Michigan’s economy is changing rapidly as communities across the state adapt to shifts in utility, manufacturing, and workforce needs. To help local leaders navigate these transitions and plan for long-term prosperity, LEO launched this new initiative to strengthen local economies, support workers, and prepare communities for the future. This gives Huron County a major opportunity to build on our county’s strengths while planning for sustainable, inclusive growth.

A Community Effort

The Huron County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) brought together a diverse group of local leaders and organizations to support this opportunity. Partners include:

  • Huron County Community Foundation (HCCF)

  • GST MI Works!

  • Thumb Community Health Partnership (TCHP)
Huron Intermediate School District (ISD) & Huron Area Technical Center

  • MSU Extension

  • Degree Forward

  • Small Business Development Center

  • Local Governments (County of Huron, City of Bad Axe, City of Caseville, City of Harbor Beach, Village of Elkton, Village of Port Austin)

  • Huron County Building & Zoning Department

  • Huron County Planning Commission

This coalition ensures that the work of the Academy will reflect the full strengths of Huron County, from philanthropy and workforce development to health and education. Their involvement highlights the collaborative spirit that defines our community.

What the Academy Means for Huron County

Over the next two years, Huron County will have access to:

  • Technical assistance and resources

  • Peer-to-peer learning with other communities

  • Direct support from consultants and state staff

The program focuses on helping communities like ours diversify the economy, build resilience, and prepare for transitions in industries like manufacturing and utilities.

Samantha Schnettler, Executive Director of the Huron County EDC, shared:

“The Huron County EDC is honored to lead our community into the Community Growth Academy. This opportunity strengthens our ability to diversify our economy, build resilience, and engage residents in shaping a sustainable future. We are eager to put these tools to work not only for Huron County, but also to serve as a model for other rural communities navigating similar transitions.”

Looking Ahead
