Sanilac County Engages Local Industries to Shape Future Economic Strategy
Exciting progress is underway in Sanilac County as strategic economic development efforts continue to move forward.
In January, the Sanilac County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) partnered with Thomas P. Miller and Associates (TPMA) to launch a comprehensive Target Industry Analysis (TIA). This analysis includes an in-depth assessment of the metrics used to evaluate growth potential, job quality, regional competitiveness, and alignment with local assets to better inform future economic development strategies.
The initial data analysis identified several key and emerging industry clusters throughout Sanilac County. Those industries include manufacturing, agriculture, hospitality and recreation, transportation, healthcare, construction, and financial services. With the target industry clusters now identified, the EDC is actively engaging local business leaders through industry-specific virtual focus groups. These sessions are designed to gather real-world insight into strengths, challenges, barriers, and future growth opportunities across each industry. The insights gathered in the sessions will directly inform strategies, priorities, and investments that impact local businesses and workforce development efforts. This is an opportunity to help ensure that future initiatives align with real industry needs, address workforce challenges, and support sustainable growth.
“This work represents an important shift for Sanilac County Economic Development”, says Executive Director Samantha Schneltter. “Previously, much of our economic development activity has been reactionary. The Target Industry Analysis allows us to take a more proactive, engaged, data-driven approach to identifying where we have real competitive advantages and focusing our efforts to support long-term growth.”
As the process continues, the project will produce a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis for each target industry cluster, bringing together key findings into clear, actionable strategies.
For local businesses, this means more focused support and a clearer path forward. For residents, it translates to stronger job opportunities, improved wages, and a more resilient local economy. This work positions Sanilac County to better engage and attract future development that compliments the needs and growth of its strongest industries, ensuring the new investments build on the existing strengths.
Ultimately, the Target Industry Analysis will strengthen Sanilac County’s ability to retain, grow, and attract businesses, supporting a stronger local economy and enhancing quality of life for residents.
